Teacher Application

Frequently Asked Questions are below.

Temperate Forest Foundation is pleased to offer teachers in North America the opportunity to be considered for an upcoming Teacher Forestry Tour. The Foundation produces the tours, but does not sponsor Teachers. We will therefore attempt to match up all qualifying candidates (as discussed on the previous Teachers' Tours page) with a sponsor in your region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the teachers teach in elementary, middle or high schools?

The primary requirement for selecting a teacher is that they teach or write curriculum for environmental studies, science, biology, or related topics. Teachers from elementary through college levels have graduated from previous tours. It is a goal of the Teachers' Tours Coalition to reach out foremost to elementary school teachers in grades 3-8. However, the most important goal in selecting a teacher is not what grade he/she teaches. It is what their ability is to reach students, peers, and the community with the information that they receive as a participant on one of these tours.

Who selects the teacher?

Teachers are most often selected by local sponsors. Often, this is a Building Material Wholesaler or Retailer, such as 'Smith Building Supply.' Teachers can submit their name directly to Temperate Forest Foundation by filling out the application. While we can't guarantee anyone will be selected, we'll ensure the names we receive are submitted to Wholesale and Retailer groups (who may be looking for interested teachers), or are provided to sponsors (that contact us directly) seeking interested teachers.

Who pays for the teacher's hotel room and food during the tour?

The sponsor pays a $700 registration fee, which covers all room and board charges from Wednesday afternoon through Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Once the teacher arrives at the tour, he/she will be treated as a VIP (this is not an exaggeration!). Local companies participating in the tour program host most meals, with Temperate Forest Foundation covering all remaining expenses.

Does my teacher have to share a hotel room?

We typically assign roommates to help keep down tour costs and to encourage interaction between tour participants. Teachers have the option of sharing with another teacher. The rooms are typically in a small hotel/motel near the vicinity of the tour. The facility typically has a conference room where teachers meet for breakfast and can network after each day's events. Spouses and family members are not permitted on the tours.

How do the teachers get from place to place?

Each day a large bus picks the teachers up at a pre-arranged time and place and takes them to each site on the tour. Speakers and videos are often shown during the drive. Beverages and sanitary facilities are available. The bus is air-conditioned.

What do teachers need to bring with them?

The Temperate Forest Foundation will provide the teachers with a packing list for each individual tour. In general, the tours are casual with a majority of time spent outdoors in the woods and indoors visiting mills and factories. Comfortable dress and shoes are a must. A good rule of thumb is:

How much hiking/walking is required?

Participants are walking through much of each day's tours. Teachers should be able to walk 2 miles at a brisk pace and be able to tolerate high temperatures (as we'll often be out in the sun for long periods, and touring some mills that can get real hot).

If you're an interested teacher, fill out our application.
